When you travel to popular tourist destinations it's usually common to find that people can speak a few words of basic English. After all, if they didn't, then they wouldn't find it so easy to make a living from us tourists!

However, if you really want to experience their culture and see the real deal then you need to be able to speak their language. If you venture away from the busy tourist areas you will often find that nobody speaks English. Basic essentials such as asking directions, ordering food or finding help in an emergency can be almost impossible if you don't speak the native tongue.
